The Art of Beatboxing: The Road to Beatbox Battle 1 vs 1 Beatbox Battles in Northern Luzon

Beatboxing is the art of controlling one's breath, lips and mouth movement in order to be able to create musical sounds.

Beatboxing, although new to many Filipinos, has been around for a much longer time.

The fist record of beatboxing dates back to the ancient times, but there is still a dispute on which country it originated from, some say it comes from the Indian art called or, but some believe that this is a Chinese art called Kouji.

During the 80s there has been a decline in the number of people interested in the craft, not until artists like Doug E. Fresh and Buffy from Fat Boys& Wise has revived Beatbox.

After this, many artists started imitating drum machines in order to produce beats and this gave birth to the idea of beatboxing.

Who are the famous people who practiced Beatbox?

Although it is not publicly known, famous musicians like Michael Jackson and Justin Timberlake are into Beatbox.

Michael Jackson for example is known for using beatbox before he composes his chart topping pop tunes.

Justin Timberlake followed in the steps of Jackson and have also used Beatbox to create songs like "Love Stoned"

Mike Swift aka Mr. Pinoy Hoops

In the 90s,  Rahzel became famous for beatboxing, audience loved his extreme deep bass.

Beatboxing is still emerging as a craft in the Philippines and one of the first Beatbox group to produce their album is Microphone Mechanics.

Microphone Mechanics is an Acapella beatbox group  composed for 4 members ( G-Who, Abdhul, Mark Pelaez, and Mouthfx) they have also collaborated on an album entitled "Gusto Kong Pumayat" feat. Wirdo.

In order to help more Filipinos get exposed to this craft,
Microphone Mechanics, TIU Theater and PHBA or Philippine Human Beatbox Alliance is coming up with a Beatboxology Battle event.

This event will be the Biggest Official Beatbox Battle and Convention in Luzon, it will happen at TIU Theater (Makati City).

The winner will take home a cash price and one free recording of their beatbox piece in a professional studio and an Official Certificate.

The event will expose the public in conjunction with singing, and would also involve it with the elements of rap.

During the event, other guests would be featured, Live Performance by Mike Swift, Puting Kalabaw, Gerald Bato and Beatbox Gor winner of Talentadong Pinoy Season 2 will be performing on May 28, 2016.

It has been a personal advocacy to share the amazing people I have met while on the road Khervin John Gallandez, is one of the many hopefuls in the local art industry— and he is definitely worth our time. He has focus and determination and young artists can learn a lot from his willingness to evolve when it comes to his craft. Q&A : At what age did you first realize that you wanted to become an artist? I started to draw at the age of 7, as far as I remember.  I draw simple houses with my cousins. My mother was a disciplinarian before, and she provides used papers for me to draw/scribble instead of me going out and playing around. When my father came back in Philippines from working abroad, he brought set of encyclopedias for me to read.  It was then the first time that I read about paintings of the old masters (e.g. Leonardo Da Vinci, Van Gogh and others) which gave me my

Origami Pilipinas: Changing the Country one paper fold at a time

MAY 22 TIU theater is an artist hub located in Makati, and I was given the chance to watch Bakata: The Battle of Street Poets, a play produced by  Toshihiko Uriu  -   The play was a huge success and is predicted to turn into a Philippine classic, but I am writing this article right now to highlight another story that occurred inside the TIU theater.  A collaboration piece that helped produce the effect of the wonder called Bakata. I noticed the glow of the lanterns and the paper cranes highlighted in the stage design, it had the flair and flamboyant but subtle effect that was needed in order to make the stage look just perfect for the story line.  Leo R Natividad is the President and Owner of Origami Pilipinas.  I was fortunate to meet members like  L. River Butay, Adonis dela Cruz as well as Jose Monzales and other volunteers who continue to strengthen Origami Pilipinas.
