On why you need to know the life of the Artist you are buying: In the age of the art market boom in Asia
There is no doubt that there is a booming art market in the Philippines as of the moment, this is not surprising since most of the regions in the country have established their own artist groups.
Baguio City alone has so many art galleries and art enthusiasts.
(Sigwada Gallery, 2016)
Almost every region in the country is sure to have an artist group rising within its vicinity, some are recognized by their municipality, while most are still finding a way to express who they are.
There is an artist heart in everyone , the dream of painting, singing and dancing your heart out is inherent in humans, but the way we have structured our way of living restrict us from fully expressing these ideas.
For this reason, one of the most repressed part of the human self is Creativity, but gone are the days where artists are considered eccentric in a bad way.
(Sigwada Gallery, 2016)
In the age of social media where people are drawn in posting where they have been. People now have a medium to express what they feel, who they are, what their visions in life are.
We no longer rely on what we see on television, rather we each have a chance to view the ideas of our friends-- the ideas of our loved ones, the ones that have been hindered for a very long time because social media was not yet around.
However, while there is big art boom that is happening, many have yet to understand the real value of a painting.
The creative industry cannot dictate what is beautiful, what is meaningful and what comes with insight.
There are millions of visual paintings being created every day, who should dictate what is valuable or not? Should it be the gallery that sells the work?
Or should it be any social media marketer that takes interests in paintings? Why do people purchase? is this art market boom a mere hype or is it real? or is there something on the surface that we have yet to understand.

On why you need to know the life of the Artist you are buying:
Since it remains unclear who dictates what is valuable or not, the principle guide is to select an art that you love.
Paintings are created with vision, before they are laid out out on canvass a tedious process goes to it. For example, Leonardo Da Vinci's " Monna Lisa" is worth millions of dollars not simply because some rich buy expressed that this work is worth millions.
Rather, a process that goes beyond the human perception went along with the work. The strokes that have been used are unique.
(Sonny Balanga, Baguio City)
It is original, Da Vinci was able to provide something that others have not done yet during his time.
In the age of social media there is a tendency that artists will be copied by other artist.
Ideas if not secured can simply be copied, but the thing that separated Da Vinci was the ability to create a peculiar smile that cannot be found anywhere else.
When you see the works of a particular artist, see what type of element they have used to stand out among the rest. What type of activities have they joined in? is their life work and beliefs in life creating waves in their own community?
In the process of art collecting, there is a need to know the artist profile and history of the artist you are purchasing.
There are artists who travel and there are artist who have stayed in one community. There are artists who were privileged enough to go to prestigious art schools, and there are artists who had to survive on their own-
Some of the most interesting artists I know, took the time to travel and mingle with other communities. Their identities have changed over time and the ripeness of the ideas are different. They are able to provide unique works because they have opened a new dimension and have sought answers outside themselves.
When you create you are closer to the Divine. An artwork is more than just a painting placed in a canvass, it is so much more. It is the story that went with it, the ideas that flowed with the work, the many years that the artists have explored in order to realize what works.
There are some galleries that would tell you, collect the artwork according to the number of competitions the artist has won, but there are those like me who will tell you to search deeply for the insight of the work that you will purchase.
( Ili likha Artist Village- Rommel Pidazo)
There are paintings that have been created through deep insight, they are not meant for mere hanging on walls, and they are not meant just be stored.
Works like Mona Lisa have been discussed for ages and they continue to have worth due to their inherent value.
It was because of Leonardo Da Vinci's perception of how he wanted to change the world through his eyes that made him an artist.
He did his paintings with brand new stroke, he was able to create a stroke that was not even inside the standard rules of paintings.
I am telling you this, because art is a varied world and there are not standard rules and once you start collecting, you must collect on the soul basis.
Otherwise, the paintings will completely mean nothing to you.
( Artist Space: Mines View: Roel Garitob, 2013)
Works that are purchased because the collector understands and believes in the idea of the artists become valuable in itself.
An art collector that is able to related and see what is unique with the artist they have purchased--is what it means to be a real art aficionado.
Accumulating paintings like material wealth is empty if you do not know how to value the inspiration that went with it.
For this reason you need to ask the galleries what story went with the work, you need to connect with the artist, it has to mean something to you, so that each time you will view the works you know you have touched something that is within the essence and core of creativity itself.
Paintings are of value, because they contain visions of the artists, they took the time to create.
There are paintings that take 2 years or more to finish. Artists have invested not just on the materials, but the process itself. (Rene Aquitania)
They underwent a series of emotional and mental challenges with the work that they have created.
You are buying a piece of that time, you are buying precision and craft, you are buying a work that is not rushed, something that is not machine. you are buying a piece of your humanity.
Much have yet to learned in the Philippines especially when it comes to art collecting, art financial literacy and bridging the information gap when it comes to understanding the art market.
The trends and movements are crucial and we need to follow them through with insight.
Happy art buying! May your next painting be valuable to you. May you feel delight in it, and may you feel connected with the work and what it has to say.
