Alay Kay Baguio: Artist Day in Baguio City

Staying true to the idea that Baguio is the melting pot of talent and culture, the local artists of Baguio in collaboration with the community has presented one of the most memorable Baguio City Day events in the history of Baguio.

The Baguio Day 105 celebration was described as light, flowing and positive.

Artist-musician Job Vezh, in collaboration with Illi-lika Artist assumption artists and Team #Espasyo, an emerging group of artists have collaborated to present what could be one of simplest and yet most inspiring event for Baguio Day.

The day, started out with various group communities like the LGBT ( Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgenders)  community with Metropolitan Community of Baguio,  with Rainbow Bar owner Bootz Yabut and Myke Sotero and Gregory Rugay.

Musicians from local bands Dready Eye with lead vocalist Gail Paolo Khasyt and band members from Stalkies along with other artists from Espasyo like Tzar Umang , Ivy Buenaobra, Alex Milanes and Jake Espiritu  and Bergs Bergonia have all contributed in making sure that the tree planting event will push through.

The tree planting was held at Buyog Watershed, Barangay Pinget, and around 150 people attended the event including artist Kidlat Tahimik and musican Raffy Chan.

Kidlat Tahimik encouraged people to name the tree they are going to plant,  Tatay Kidlat, as Baguio people would call him, named his tree " Inhabian", the tree foresters of DENR has encouraged Baguio artists to adapt the area, in order to make sure that it will be maintained. Buyong Watershed is one of the main water sources of Baguio, but it is also one of the most threatened area by squatters.

If Baguio artists will adapt the area, and do monthly clean-ups and tree planting projects the place can be properly protected  from those who are aiming to uproot the remaining trees that provide water for the residents of Baguio.

While planting, musicians played local and indigenous instruments like the Djembe drums.  Kidlat Tahimik, has invited the same tree planters to return on December 1 to check up on the trees and make sure that they will thrive.

After the tree planting entitled Alay Kay Baguio:105 as conceptualized by Job Vezh. People returned to artist Illi-likha, Assumption Road. With the help of Dr. Ron Paraan, Michelle Garcia and  Peter Rey Bautista, a proper sound system was installed in Assumption Road for the use of local artists and bands, thanks to the cooperation of University of Baguio sound engineer Jun Dalino and  Audio-enhance.

The event was also made possible through the help of Baguio residents who are overseas but still do what they can for the city of Baguio like Cathy Afable, Remina Bastian-Tollet, Aida Yodong, Albert Malona to name a few.

The event started out with a simple poetry and singing performance by Children of the Cordillera, followed by a performance for nature by DKK- Cordillera,  they spoke about how they want Baguio to remain...of how the children has envisioned a Baguio that takes care of its environment.

Bands like Daluion, Atty. Chris Donaal,  Edralins,  Dready Eye, Kadmanglayan, singers Loribel Martin, Stalkies, Negative X, Binhi, Bobby " Wuds" Balingit, and artist-dancer named Diyosa presented their music and craft  at Assumption Road to the delight of the audience.

(more artists performed but randomly - although we are not able to name them all, their efforts and contributions are recognized)

Artists from Espasyo group like the Team Nat. Sci Dancers,  (SNS Theatri Naturalis Artis) headed by Maui Fernando did a flash mob dance to the surprise of the audience. The crowd got even more ecstatic with the sudden contributions of the group called  Maximum Parkour while the bands sang their songs.

On that same day artists like Guhit Pinas and Cosplayers from OtakuBlast and Harajukku Cosplayers have also showcased their talents at Porta Vaga and Session Road. Both of these artist groups have given their time and creativity, to make sure that people passing by on Session Road will have a good time.

The one thing that separated the event, from the other events that were done in Baguio City, is the lack of too much advertising. It was reminiscent of the first Panagbenga Community events, where local artists where given a chance to express themselves, without necessarily feeding the audience too much advertising. The community collaboration was felt during that day.

We have to give value to  our local talents, to the creativity that they can bring. Artists in Baguio, using different art forms can redeem Baguio--- When people create, they get inspired- and inspiration can defeat any negative thing that can come up with their persona lives. If personal lives are fixed, a stronger and better community can be seen.

Baguio residents, have always been known to search for their own local bands.

Baguio residents have a strong support system for their local bands and prefer to watch them instead of hiring other talents from other areas.
Baguio City houses some of the best bands, musicians like Jethro Sandico have been steady in providing a number of concert and including Rap Battle and J-pop music from collaborating bands to the delight of Baguio residents every month.

The closing of Session Road and Assumption Road, also presented the idea of how beautiful Baguio could be, if the sense of place of the people could be returned.

People enjoyed that day, because people did not feel that they were threatened by cars, or pollution. People began to remember how joyful and creative Baguio talents really are and how wonderful it is to be from Baguio City.

Mabuhay ang Baguio City! Happy Birthday! Happy 105

A stronger collaboration for the city of Baguio for the Baguio Day 106 Celebration is most certainly in the works!

Know your local artist: Khervin John Gallandez : The Ilocano Artist

Khervin John Gallandez is an emerging visual artist from Ilocos. It has been a personal advocacy to share the amazing people I have met while on the road Khervin John Gallandez, is one of the many hopefuls in the local art industry— and he is definitely worth our time. He has focus and determination and young artists can learn a lot from his willingness to evolve when it comes to his craft. Q&A : At what age did you first realize that you wanted to become an artist? I started to draw at the age of 7, as far as I remember.  I draw simple houses with my cousins. My mother was a disciplinarian before, and she provides used papers for me to draw/scribble instead of me going out and playing around. When my father came back in Philippines from working abroad, he brought set of encyclopedias for me to read.  It was then the first time that I read about paintings of the old masters (e.g. Leonardo Da Vinci, Van Gogh and others) which gave me my

Why you need to visit the Bamboo Intramuros

There are very few places in Metro Manila that would make you feel relaxed and one with nature . I was fortunate enough to meet one of the legendary owners of  Bamboo Grande franchise.  Honesto Deuda aka Ka-Oni  is well loved by friends, acquaintances and people who have met him from different walks of life.  He co-owns some of the best bar and restaurants in Metro Manila. Ka Oni is known for creating inspiring and bars that have soul, spunk and spirit.  He has been conceptualizing organic looking resto bars for more than 10 years now. Ka- Oni's creations are noticeable because the resto bars that he creates are made out of love for music and the arts. His process is different, Ka Oni  creates the vision for the restaurants but does not need to put them on paper, they are directly executed from his imagination to reality.   Ka Oni was already featured in Mabuhay International Magazine for the amazing work that he has done with his surrounding commun

Origami Pilipinas: Changing the Country one paper fold at a time

MAY 22 TIU theater is an artist hub located in Makati, and I was given the chance to watch Bakata: The Battle of Street Poets, a play produced by  Toshihiko Uriu  -   The play was a huge success and is predicted to turn into a Philippine classic, but I am writing this article right now to highlight another story that occurred inside the TIU theater.  A collaboration piece that helped produce the effect of the wonder called Bakata. I noticed the glow of the lanterns and the paper cranes highlighted in the stage design, it had the flair and flamboyant but subtle effect that was needed in order to make the stage look just perfect for the story line.  Leo R Natividad is the President and Owner of Origami Pilipinas.  I was fortunate to meet members like  L. River Butay, Adonis dela Cruz as well as Jose Monzales and other volunteers who continue to strengthen Origami Pilipinas. Origami Pilipinas and their Advocacy: Origami Pilipinas, was founded out of pa
